A $30 million textile education and training centre proposed for Geelong is expected to lift value-added wool production in Australia.
Textile industries have pledged $16 million for the Australian Fibre and Textiles Education Centre, with the State Government sharing the remaining $14 million cost with the Commonwealth.
The centre would provide training in fibre-to-fabric textile processing to enable greater domestic processing of Australian-grown wool.
The proposal, which follows an inquiry into the feasibility of a local value-added industry, aims to tackle the outflow of fleece to countries that export processed products back to Australia.
